Internet Measurements & Design

Internet is a strategic asset and has a role of primary importance in current society. End users perceive the Internet as a set of services they use every day: for example www, e-mail, VoIP, IP TV. Internet with all its services, as perceived by the user, is the result of the relationships between more than 50,000 Autonomous Systems (ASes) each managed by different administrations and with different interests. Each interconnection between AS is regulated by economic relations and is implemented through the use of BGP, which is the de-facto standard inter-domain routing protocol. The monitoring of the various interconnections established between ASes is crucial to discover and identify weaknesses and dependencies of the Internet, and finally to allow researchers to identify methodologies and protocols to improve it.
