The Role of Human factors in the Design of Computer-mediated Personalized Environments

Advances in Web-based oriented technologies and services are taking place with a considerable speed around the world. Users today facing principal difficulties with regards to Web-based systems mainly emphasized on the ineffective and inefficient content provision at “anytime, anywhere and anyhow” basis. As communications and IT usage become an integral part of many people's lives and the available products and services become more varied and sophisticated, users are expected to be able to personalize a service to meet their individual needs and preferences. Due to the heterogeneous users’ needs and requirements, user modeling could be considered as a successful step towards the identification of users’ preferences. However, could user profiling nowadays be considered complete enough? Are all the vital parameters of users' characteristics taken into account in order for the Web-based systems to provide them with the most user-centric result? This presentation introduces a comprehensive user model, incorporating the User Perceptual Preference Characteristics (UPPC) that serves as the core element for filtering Web-based raw content, and determines the visual attention, cognitive and emotional processing parameters that are different for each user or user group. It further analyzes specific metrics of these intrinsic users’ perceptual values as well as the “traditional” user characteristics that together tend to have specific impact onto the information space and give the most optimized, adapted and personalized result. Based on an ongoing experimental evaluation with approximately 700 users, both in an eLearning and eCommerce personalized environment, it has been shown that the incorporation of human factors in Web-based environments increases users’ performance, accuracy, satisfaction and learning ability while interacting with the complicated Web structures.

Note: Panagiotis Germanakos is currently an ERCIM post-doctoral Research Fellow at the 'Web Applications for the Future Internet' Research Group in IIT-CNR. He also holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Management and MIS of the School of Business, University of Nicosia (since 2008). He is Co-founder and Deputy Head of the Semantic and Cognitive Research Adaptivity Technologies (SCRAT) research group of the Department of Computer Science, University of Cyprus (since 2003) and Research Scientist in the Laboratory of New Technologies of the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (since 2004). He obtained his PhD from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2008; his research interests are in Web Adaptation and Personalization Environments and Systems based on user profiling encompassing amongst others visual, cognitive and emotional processes, implemented on desktop and mobile / wireless platforms.
