GPS Tracking: Privacy Threats and Some Countermeasures

Location-based services (LBSs) are advancing along with the incrementation of users provided of GPS-equipped devices. Some of these services need to track the user and this brings to a great loss of privacy. Our idea is that the user can make use of several LBSs without showing information about his real position. We propose a solution that provides privacy and the possibility to take full advantage of the LBS at the same time. We have formalized the concept of Obfuscation Function, with which we can guarantee users' privacy in location-tracking services. We have also described two methods that allow users to share their location preserving their privacy in location-aware services.
