Mail:

I am researcher at the Institute for Informatics and Telematics of the Italian National Research Council located in Pisa since September 2009. My research activities focus on modelling efficient algorithms for bioinformatics and information retrieval.
In the first years of my experience at IIT-CNR the main focus was on business intelligence on the web. Subsequently, my interests shifted to algorithms for bioinformatics. In the latter field, my research activities spans the so-called omics sciences: genomics (i.e. the research of variants in the DNA sequence), transcriptomics (i.e. the analysis of the gene expression profiles) and epigenetics (i.e. the investigation of the histones that are at the basis of the 3d organization of the genome). In particular, I develop customized algorithms for extracting, integrating and analyzing omics data coming from NGS (next generation sequencing).
I have also included training and teaching among my core activities holding for some years the chair of "information systems for business management" at the University of Siena, teaching "algorithm design" at the University of Pisa, and recently teaching "machine learning for structural biology" in the master of Bioinformatics and data science at the University of Siena
In April 2008 I completed the Ph.D in "Information Engineering" at the Siena University defending a thesis titled: "Fast Clustering for Web Information Retrieval" supervised by Prof Marco Maggini and Dr. Marco Pellegrini
In December 2003 I’ve got the Master degree in "Tecnologie Informatiche" at the Pisa University under the supervision of Prof Roberto Grossi.

Activities

Since 2010 he cooperates on behalf of the IIT-CNR with the Department for Technological Innovation (DIT) and he contributed to a study published in the "Rapporto egov Italia 2010".
His research activity covers the fields of Information Retrieval and Bio-Informatics. In particular in the field of Information Retrieval he gave his contribution to the document clustering, automatic static and dynamic summaries of videos, techniques for similarity searching and the analysis of the Web graph to search, classify and label users communities. In bio-informatics he contributed to the development of algorithms for: clustering of Microarrays, retrieval of repeated structures in the DNA and the parental haplotype reconstruction.

Participation to the organization of events

In 2012 he was in the organizing committee of the final workshop of the BINET project, in 2011 he was in the organizing committee of the annual meeting of the Bioinformatics Italian Society
He was among the editors of the "Proceedings of the 8th Annual Meeting of the Bioinformatics Italian Society", BITS 2011, Pisa, Italy. June 2011.
In 2006 he was in the technical staff of the workshop: "Algorithmic and Numerical Aspects in Web Search"
In 2004 he was in the technical staff of the "2nd combstu workshop".

Participation to projects

Since November 2012 he is principal investigator of the project "Sviluppo di algoritmi per l'estrazione di concetti essenziali e relazioni dal testo per il Question Answering" in cooperation with the University of Siena and QuestIT s.r.l.
Since June 2012 he is responsible for the Computational Mathematic group of the project "Misurare, valutare e migliorare la PA su internet" founded by the "Dipartimento per la digitalizzazione della pubblica amministrazione e l'innovazione tecnologica della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri".
Since 2010 he is the technical leader on behalf of the IIT-CNR at the BINET Project (A new Business Intelligence Platform based on Social Networks) founded by Tuscany Region.
He has also participated to the Network of Excellence Virtual Physiological Human (VPH NoE) founded by the European Community.
