Wearable Computing and Sensor Systems for Healthcare

Wearable technology represents the first step towards a novel definition of e-health systems aimed at the continuous and multiparametric monitoring of patients anywhere and anytime. However, this technology must be accompanied by appropriate communication protocols and algorithms for the elaboration and correlation of data provided by different sources, satisfying the main requirements of low power consumption and adequate data rate. In this chapter we analyze the technological aspects of the design and development of wearable sensor networks for healthcare, analyzing and comparing different solutions proposed in literature, and paying particular attention to currently available wireless standards in order to develop efficient and reliable Health BAN as the building block of personalized and pervasive healthcare systems.
