He is a research associate of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) allocated in the Institute for Informatics and Telematics in Pisa.
As delegate for Italy in the Governmental Advisory Committee of ICANN, he is the senior member of that committee; he is also member of the Security and Stability Advisory Committee of ICANN.
He is President of the Italian chapter of the Internet society. ISOC Italy has been instrumental in the activation of IGF Italy that held recently his fourth edition.
He is member for Italy in the High Level Internet Governance group of the European Commission.
Some past engagements:
He has been director of the CNUCE - CNR (an institute dedicated to research and development of advanced services on information science and networking) from 83 through 96.
He has been one of the pioneer for the introduction of the Internet in Italy; the first permanent link to ARPAnet was established between CNUCE and US-Virginia in 1986.
He has been administator the ccTLD “.it” since its inception in 1987, until 1999. After that date he supported the Italian registry for the international relations and as a member of the policy council until 2010.
He brought the CNUCE Institute among the founders of the Internet Society (ISOC) in 1992.
He acted as President of TERENA (Trans European Research and Education Networking Association) from 95 through 99. During this period he favoured the accomplishment of the spin off phase of RIPE/NCC acting under TERENA umbrella.
In the year 2000 he acted as cheaf consultant of US administration for a redelegation study of the Palestinian country code “.ps”.
He is author of about a hundred publications and technical reports; he has been guest editor of the IEEE Proceedings Special Issue on “Evolution of Internet Technologies” published in September 2004.
