Workshop "JRC and the Pisa Research System:
Common Interests and Possible Collaborations", Pisa 18 May 2018

Background

The city of Pisa hosts the University of Pisa and the two Grand École "Scuola Normale Superiore" and "Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies" as well as the largest branch of the National Research Council (CNR), research centres of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), and the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO).  At present the interaction and collaboration between the Universities, Schools and Research Institutions in Pisa and the JRC occur through RTD projects and other scattered initiatives (e.g. the atmospheric observatory located in the Natural Park of San Rossore in Pisa with the Unit C5 Air and Climate belonging to the JRC Directorate C – Energy, Transport and Climate).

Within the scope of boosting the European Research (ERA) and Educational Areas (EEA) as well as giving the development of regions the collaboration between JRC and the Pisa Universities, Schools and Research Institutions could be enhanced through a coordinated approach on strategic educational, research and development areas and topics of common interest.

Scope

The objective of the workshop is to identify collaborative topics of common interest and to discuss the procedure for the implementation of the cooperation between JRC and the University of Pisa as well as the Schools and the Research Institutions located in Pisa. In order to deepen the respective knowledge, initial contacts with Pisa were aimed at establishing a first list of macro-areas of common interest. This list is at the basis of the workshop and the objective is to present and discuss the macro-areas in more detail in order to create a preliminary list of topics for collaboration.

Structure

The workshop is structured into two roundtables regarding macro-areas of common interest (Bio-economy, food, nutrition and health and Energy, Environment and Climate) and two topics that are of interest to JRC and the Pisa Research Ecosystem, respectively. During each roundtable key topics will be shortly presented and discussed among the participants. The final discussion should summarise the outcome of the roundtable/single presentations in order to confirm a first list of selected topics and to identify future steps for the implementation of the cooperation agreement.

The Institutes of the CNR Research Area of Pisa will participate to all sessions of the Workshop (general presentation, round tables and discussion) presenting their research fields, knowhow and competences in the research subject indicated by JRC.
